Attractions to Explore
Pai Canyon
Situated approximately 8 kilometres south of Pai along the main highway, Pai Canyon offers a remarkable adventure without any entrance fees. Upon arrival, simply park your scooter and treat yourself to refreshments from the small vendors before embarking on the journey up the trail.
The hike at Pai Canyon typically begins with a leisurely 5-minute walk up the stairs to reach the first viewpoint, this is where many visitors gather to witness an amazing sunset. However, for those seeking a more exhilarating adventure like myself, venturing along the narrow ridges to reach less crowded viewpoints promises an unforgettable experience at the canyon. As you traverse the ridge trails, it’s essential to exercise a little caution, as they are often dusty and feature unprotected drop-offs. Yes, it can be a little terrifying and if you are not stable on your feet I wouldn’t recommend you do it.
Pai Canyon undoubtedly stands out as the best location to witness a sunset in the region, with the surrounding mountains illuminated by the sun’s fading light. Keep in mind that the canyon is busiest during golden hour, so brace yourself for crowds during this time.
Pai Hot Springs
Sai Ngam Hot Spring lies approximately 17 kilometres north of Pai, a convenient 25-minute drive from the town centre. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by Sai Ngam’s captivating hot springs rising steam, it features a few pools for you to explore. The highest pool has the hottest water temperature, reaching a comfortable 34 degrees Celsius.
I’ve been to a few hot springs before but this one has the clearest water I have ever seen, so I would recommend packing some swimming goggles and something to take pics with underwater such as a GoPro or get a phone protector. There is also an abundance of small vendors outside the springs so if you fancy a snack they have you covered.
Walking Street Night Market
Prepare your taste buds for an indulgent journey at Pai Night Market, where an abundance of delectable delights awaits you. You will have plenty of choices when in this market, which is my favourite market that I have come across so far. Located on Pai’s main street, the bustling Pai Night Market offers a glimpse into the vibrant local culture. Despite its small size, this lively town ensures that every nook and cranny is filled with excitement.
Since the legislation of a certain herb, Pai Walking Street offers more than just shopping and dining. It’s also the perfect spot to unwind and soak in the bustling ambience while feeling a little high. Find a cosy bench, grab a blunt, and indulge in some leisurely people-watching. As the sun sets, the street truly comes alive with the sound of live music emanating from bars and restaurants.
Accommodation
For such a small town Pai has a huge variety of accommodations to choose from including; Party Hostels, Resorts, Posh Hotels and Private bungalows. So you can either unwind in Pai and enjoy the surroundings or party hard in the jungle and rest your hungover head in the hot springs.
Pai Circus Hostel
The renowned Pai Circus Hostel stands out as one of the premier party destinations in Thailand, if not the absolute best in Pai itself! From dawn to dusk, guests revel in lively festivities. Now I can only handle party hostels for around 3 nights otherwise I’m a grumpy mess, but where I had enjoyed pai for 2 days before checking into this hostel I didn’t have to worry about going out with a hangover and seeing the sights.
An epic beer pong tournament took place while I was there followed by a foam party which I loved and the atmosphere leaves you buzzing with excitement, Circus is undoubtedly the coolest hostel in Pai. The accommodation comes in the form of dorm rooms nestled within traditional bamboo bungalows, kept cool by standing fans and the odd aircon unit.
Buzzas@PaiChan
Buzzas was the hostel I used when wanting to explore the surrounding area, they have a good social vibe and the hotel surroundings are gorgeous. You have a choice of Private rooms and Dorm Rooms so whatever your budget they have got the accommodation for you.
I decided to go for a private room in this hostel just because I wanted to rejuvenate after Chiang Mai and all the craziness that happened there. This is the hostel I would recommend if you want a social atmosphere but nothing overwhelming. Just a chilled-out few days while in the pool, or exploring the surrounding areas of Pai.
Nightlife
Nightlife in Pai is not like anywhere I have been before, a mix of people smoking weed and great cocktails in bars and the night ending in chaos and dancing on tables, whatever your preference you’re for a night out you are sure to find it in Pai, well unless you’re looking for a topless gay nightclub because you’re not going to find that.
Spirt Bar
This is an absolute gem for young travellers, hidden away from the main strip, you will have to put your hunting hat on to find it or ask Google Maps or a local. Picture this: vibrant tunes filling the air, a cosy nook to sink into, and a colourful cocktail in hand. It’s the epitome of Pai’s eclectic charm.
What makes Spirit Bar truly special is its knack for bringing people together. You’ll find yourself swapping chatting with strangers-turned-friends over a few drinks. It’s the kind of place where memories are made and laughter echoes long into the night, this might be cause of the recently legalised weed though, and I do get a bit giggly.
Why Not Bar
Located on the main walking street of Pai, this bar is not easily missed, it’s a great bar to meet people who like to party. During the early evening, it’s more of a low-key bar vibe with a pool table and darts board. You can grab some food here as well so can be a great place to start your night out after enjoying the rest of Pai in the afternoon.
The atmosphere changes once it hits around 11 pm and feels more like a club with dancing on the tables and bumping into people. The bar is exposed to the street and therefore doesn’t feel too crammed in and of course, you can just pop onto the street if you need some fresh air.
Getting Around Pai
Rent a Scooter
One of the best ways to explore Pai is by renting a scooter. With its compact size and scenic roads, Pai is easily navigable by scooter, allowing you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Just remember to drive safely and always wear a helmet
Use Local Transportation
If you prefer not to drive, Pai also offers various local transportation options, including songthaews (shared taxis) and tuk-tuks. These affordable and convenient modes of transportation can take you to popular attractions and nearby villages.
Explore on Foot or Bicycle
With its compact size and pedestrian-friendly streets, Pai is perfect for exploring on foot or bicycle. Rent a bicycle from one of the many rental shops in town and pedal your way through the picturesque countryside, stopping to admire the scenery along the way.
Getting to Pai
There is one road through Pai, easily found on Google Maps. Busses transport tourists and locals from Chiang Mai to Pai. Booking can be done at a kiosk in Chiang Mai or through your hostel. If unable to book, ask for help your hostel will be able to point you in the right direction. The road to Pai is winding, so take travel tablets if prone to motion sickness. Bring headphones to block out others’ discomfort. Some passengers on my bus experienced discomfort🤮, but I slept throughout the journey, lucky me.
Final Thoughts
As you embark on your journey through Pai, embrace the spirit of adventure, immerse yourself in the local culture, and let the beauty of this enchanting destination captivate you. From its stunning natural landscapes to its vibrant market, Pai offers a truly unforgettable experience that will leave you longing to return. My recommendation on how long you should stay in Pai would be for 5 nights to enjoy both the surrounding natural beauty and the unique party atmosphere of the city.
